Visit some of Maui’s most scenic locations: Haleakala National Park, Iao Valley, and Kealia Wildlife Refuge on this immersive tour.
Tour Overview (*denotes stops made)
Café O’Lei* – Enjoy an all-you-can-eat continental breakfast prior to your journey. Included in your tour price.
Haleakala Summit and National Park*– Known as the “House of the Sun,” this dormant volcano towers at over 10,000 feet above sea level, and is renowned for its starkly beautiful volcanic landscape – home to many endemic and endangered species including the lovely Silversword plant – and magnificent vistas of the island.
Lavender Café and Farm* – Kick back and enjoy a classic picnic in this fragrant Upcountry Maui spot.
Iao Valley State Park – This Park was once a famous battleground where King Kamehameha defeated Maui island’s warriors in his quest to unite the Hawaiian islands. A National Natural Landmark, the valley is also the site of a burial ground for Hawaiian alii (royalty) and today, home to a lush botanical garden.
Iao Needle – This striking 1,200-foot land formation within the state park looks like a stand-alone column, but is actually the narrow edge of an ancient volcanic ridge.
KealiaNational Wildlife Refuge* – One of the few natural wetlands remaining in the Hawaiian Islands, the refuge is a favorite hangout of endangered wetland birds as well as migratory birds from Asia, Alaska, and Canada. The wildlife refuge is closed on Holidays and weekends.
About the Tour
Explore the island’s significant and stunning cultural sites, and learn how its ecological systems function. Visit Maui’s sacred mountains, forbidden Iao Valley (once only accessible to royalty), and bucolic Upcountry Maui; and gain fascinating insights into Hawaii’s ancient culture, weather conditions and the natural resources and practices that helped sustain island life.
Our knowledgeable guide will share a wealth of information on a variety of topics, such as Hawaiian cultural and farming practices; war and peace-time living (bird-watching, food practices, fishing, climate zones); how Hawaiians practiced malama aina (land stewardship); and the ancient ahupuaa watershed system.
