Top Things to Do on Kauai, Hawaii
The island of Kauai, also known as “The Garden Isle,” offers a wide assortment of visitor activities, sights, and attractions. We list some of the best things to do on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.
Visit Waimea Canyon & its Surrounding Areas
Often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific and what Mark Twain nicknamed the “Little Grand Canyon”, the Waimea Canyon on Kauai’s west side offers staggering views of water falls and tropical vegetation within its 3,500 foot elevation. The Canyon was created by the Waimea River combined with rainfall from Mount Waialeale, considered to be one of the wettest spots on earth. Visitors will also want to visit nearby attractions which include Hanapepe Valley Lookout, Old Russian Fort, Captain Cook’s Landing, Spectacular Waimea Canyon, Spouting Horn, Waimea & Koloa Town.
Waimea Canyon & Fern Grotto Tour
Take a Tour of Fern Grotto
One of Kauai’s signature sights, The Fern Grotto was once reserved only for Hawaiian royalty. For the past 50 years, tour boats have taken visitors up the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto. Here, the mouth of the Grotto is draped with yard long sword and maidenhair ferns while water falls empty into a pool. More adventurous visitors can rent a kayak and paddle up the river, exploring the area at their own pace. On a separate note, the nearby Paradise Gardens is also a popular place for wedding ceremonies. Some other points of interest include Opaekaa Falls Lookout and Holo-holo Ku Heiau.
Enjoy a Kauai Luau
You’ll find two of Kauai’s popular luaus in Wailua and Kapaa, located on the eastern end of Kauai. Both the Hiva Pasefika Luau and Smith’s Family Garden Luau offer an authentic Hawaiian luau menu including steamed Kalua pig, fresh island fish, sweet potatoes, imu steamed taro, haupia, poi, and much more. Guests are then entertained by a show celebrating the history, culture, and people of Polynesia complete with fire knife dances, hula, and ancient Hawaiian chants.
