Although it’s the youngest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, the island of Hawaii – also known as the Big Island, is one of the most environmentally diverse and historically rich island in the chain.

The birthplace of the legendary Kamehameha the Great, the King who unified the Hawaiian islands under one rule, the Big Island continues to change as it is the home of Kilauea Volcano – the most active volcano in the world, renowned for its’ continuous lava flows going on for more than 20 consecutive years.

The first meeting of the Western world and ancient Hawaii took place in Kealakekua on the Big Island’s south west coast with Captain James Cook.
